Silicone Rubber's Properties and Applications

An Overview of Silicone Rubber

Silicone rubber polymer molecules have a chain structure produced by Si-O (silicon-oxygen) bonds and a high molar mass linear polysiloxane composition. Because the primary bond type is the Si-O-Si bond, the silicon atom is mostly coupled to the methyl group, only a tiny quantity of unsaturated groups are inserted on the side chain, the intermolecular force is modest, and the molecule has a helical shape. Because the methyl groups are organized in an outward direction and may freely spin, silicone rubber offers more heat resistance, electrical insulation, and chemical stability than other common rubbers.

Polydioxymethylene siloxane, a common silicone rubber, has a spiral molecular structure and low intermolecular tension, making it resilient. Simultaneously, the formaldehyde group pointing out of the spiral may freely spin, giving the silicone rubber unique surface features including water repellency and surface anti-sticking.

The major characteristics and applications of silicone rubber are:

Heat resistance: Because silicone rubber made by our silicone goods manufacturer is significantly more heat resistant than regular rubber, it can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used virtually permanently at 150°C without affecting performance; it can be used constantly at 200°C for 10,000 hours; and it can even be used temporarily at 350°C. It is commonly utilized in situations that need heat resistance, such as thermos bottle sealing rings and pressure cooker heat-resistant handles.

Cold resistance: Ordinary rubber gradually loses elasticity at temperatures below -20 to 30°C, but silicone rubber retains elasticity at -60 to 70°C. Some silicone rubbers, when appropriately made, can also resist extremely low temperatures and can be utilized for low-temperature sealing rings.

Weather resistance: Ordinary rubber degrades quickly due to the action of ozone created by corona discharge, but weather resistance is one of the features of silicone elastomers since silicone rubber is not affected by ozone. And its physical qualities vary only slightly under long-term UV and other environmental conditions. It is an exterior sealing material.

Electrical properties: Silicone rubber has a high resistivity and maintains its resistance over a wide temperature and frequency range. Simultaneously, silicone rubber is resistant to high-voltage corona discharge and arc discharge. It is suitable for high-voltage insulators, TV high-voltage caps, electrical components, and other applications.

Conductivity: Silicone rubber contains conductive contact points for the keyboard when conductive fillers (such as carbon black) are applied.

Thermal conductivity: Silicone rubber exhibits thermal conductivity when specific thermally conductive fillers are introduced. Heat sinks, thermally conductive gaskets, copiers, fax machines, and thermally conductive rollers can all benefit from it.

The radiation resistance of silicone rubber containing phenylsilane groups has been considerably increased. It may be used for electrically insulated cables, nuclear power plant connections, and so forth.

Flame retardancy: Silicone rubber is combustible on its own, but when a small amount of flame retardant is added, it becomes flame retardant and self-extinguishing. Furthermore, because silicone rubber does not contain organic halides, it does not emit smoke or toxic gas when burned, making it suitable for a variety of occasions requiring strict fire protection.

Air permeability: Silicone rubber film is more permeable to air than regular rubber and plastic waxed films. Another distinguishing trait is its high selectivity for varied air permeabilities. It can be utilized in medical supplies such as gas exchange membranes and artificial organs.
